Food Allergy Precautions
If a student has a known food allergy, there are required precautions:
- Work with the nurse to ensure all required paperwork and medications are are onsite
- Post the Food Allergy Sign on all classroom doors
- Remember to edit the form with the current allergy information for your classroom
- Communicate all food allergy information to classroom families, building administrators, and anyone who regularly works with your students
- Include allergy information in all substitute plans
- Ensure the cafeteria staff are aware and any relevant forms are completed by the family
- If the allergen is an ingredient commonly found in processed foods, including milk, soy, egg, wheat, sesame, etc, create a plan to check and label any food that comes into the classroom for class-wide consumption as a known allergen
In the event that a child is given a known allergen, this is a reportable incident and will need to be reported to the DHS Hotline and Licensing. If the student requires medical attention, an injury report will also be required.
